Neck Pain

What are common causes of Neck Pain?

Most neck pain is caused by a combination of factors including injury, poor posture, subluxation (misalignment) stress and in some instances disc problems.

Whiplash Injury

Whiplash is caused by sudden movement of the head and results in damage to the supporting muscles, ligaments, joints, nerves and other connective tissue in the neck and upper back.

Poor Posture

Poor posture puts added stress on the neck and upper back and can lead to neck pain, upper back pain and headaches. Chiropractic therapy is very effective at treating this type of pain.

This type of problem is extremely common. Most people experience this type of issue even if they don't have any pain. Misalignments can also commonly cause pain and inflammation, they are very easy to treat gently with a variety of techniques.

Neck Disc Hernations

The discs in your neck can herniate or bulge putting pressure on the nerves. With this type of condition a patient often has neck pain with symptoms associated down the arms.

What are some common treatments for Neck Pain?

There are many common treatments for neck pain and at Discovery Chiropractic we focus on Spinal Manipulative Therapy (Chiropractic Adjusments) either by hand or with an impulse instrument, mobilization/flexion-distraction, exercise/stretches, postural advice, and Low Level Laser. Your specific condition, severity and age will determine which treatment is best for you.

Chiropractic Adjustment

There are several methods for adjusting the cervical spine. The purpose is to re-establish normal motion and position of your spinal bones and joint. The doctors can adjust the type of technique based on your condition and comfort.

Our special Flexion-Distraction tables can be used to gently mobilize your lumbar spine to aid in restoring flexibility and position

Postural Advice / Exercise/Stretches

The doctors often prescribe postural exercises and stretches to aid in the healing process and help prevent the condition from returning.

Low Level Laser Therapy

This is a physiotherapy type treatment that uses light to aid in the healing process, reduce inflammation and pain.

Homecare for Neck Pain

At Discovery Chiropractic we believe that regular exercise and stretching can go a long way in preventing neck pain. If you are in pain there are a few simple things you can try at home to get some relief.

Heat and Ice

Typically if you just start to have pain (within 72 hours) ice would be your choice of home care. Ice helps reduce inflammation. Frequency would be 15 minutes on to cool (not freeze) the area in a given hour.

Once the pain starts to subside try using heat at the same frequency, or you could try using heat for 15 minutes then ice for 15 minutes and nothing for 30 minutes. Remember you only need to cool the area then warm the area. You do not want to burn yourself or cause frost bite.

Movement and Rest

Whenever you are recovering from neck pain it is important to try to stay moving without irritating the area. So this means resting but also getting up and walking. The worst thing you can do is stay in bed all day.
