There are many different reasons for lower back pain. The following are some of the more common conditions we see at Discovery Chiropractic.
Disruptions of normal spinal movement or position causes joint impingement, inflammation and pain.
Herniated Lumbar Disc
A herniated disc can be a source of severe, debilitating pain lower back pain usually accompanied with leg symptoms. Chiropractic care has been shown to safely and effectively treat this condition.
Strains, Sprains and Spasms
Overworking the muscles or ligaments of the lower back can lead to small tears in the tissues which become painful, swollen and tight. This can be a result of a motor vehicle accident, work injury or repetitive type activities like raking, gardening or simply reaching to lift an object.
Simply sitting at a desk for long hours can create repetitive ergonomic stress on the lumbar spine, neck and upper back. This very common activity tightens the joints and muscles of these areas.
Pregnancy and Lumbar Pain
At Discovery Chiropractic it is very common for us to see and safely treat women in various stages of pregnancy. Weight shift and hormonal changes can put added stress on the spine.

Our special Flexion-Distraction tables can be used to gently mobilize and stretch your lumbar spine to aid in restoring flexibility and position.

The doctors often prescribe postural exercises and stretches to aid in the healing process and help prevent the condition from returning.
Low Level Laser Therapy
This is a physiotherapy type treatment that uses light to aid in the healing process, reducing inflammation and pain.
Homecare for Lumbar Pain
At Discovery Chiropractic we believe that regular exercise and stretching can go a long way in preventing lower back pain. If you are in pain there are a few simple things you can try at home to get some relief.
Heat and Ice
Typically if you just start to have pain (within 72 hours) ice would be your choice of home care. Ice helps reduce inflammation. Frequency would be 15 minutes on to cool (not freeze) the area in a given hour.
Once the pain starts to subside try using heat at the same frequency, or you could try using heat for 15 minutes then ice for 15 minutes and nothing for 30 minutes. Remember you only need to cool the area then warm the area. You do not want to burn yourself or cause frost bite.
Movement and Rest
Whenever you are recovering from back pain it is important to try to stay moving without irritating the area. Changing positions frequently, getting up from lying down or sitting to a standing position and gently moving around will aid in mobilization of your spine. Pronlonged bed rest causes stiffness and has been shown to aggravate a back injury and delay recovery.
